The Teen Art Board (TAB) is a leadership program comprising hardworking, creative teenagers who want to engage with art in their community. The goal and mission of the Teen Art Board are to inspire creativity while having fun and to make a positive impact on the community. TAB members aim to define and validate creative minds in the high schools and colleges of Southwest Georgia.

“Each school year, our student leadership group tackles a project designed to benefit the community,” AMA Director of Education and Public Programming Annie Vanoteghem, who is the AMA’s adviser for the group, said. “This year’s group painted a pair of artworks titled Nature’s Dance for display in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit family waiting area at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

“We are incredibly proud to see the students’ work displayed in a space where it can provide joy and a sense of calm to those going through difficult times.”

TAB members develop creative programming and coordinate community events. They plan, support, and promote teen initiatives at the AMA and within the community. They attend and participate in lectures, group discussions, and artist workshops and serve as volunteers assisting with museum classes, public events, and community programs. Members can earn community service hours by volunteering for and participating in various events and programs.

“The teens are exposed to things that help them develop skills in areas including critical thinking, planning, leadership and decision making,” Vanoteghem said. “This year, our current TAB members will be heavily involved in the selection process for new members for the 2025-26 board.”

Previous TAB projects include the large mural on the wall of the Cookie Shoppe in downtown Albany, the collection of art supplies for children staying at Liberty House, a refuge for women and children facing domestic abuse, and the creation of a free monthly Student Art Studio Saturdays for high school students at the AMA.

Each TAB member gains a behind-the-scenes understanding of how museums operate. Through workshops, lectures, and discussions with staff and artists, the program enhances TAB members’ foundational knowledge of art history, museum work, creative careers, and the inner workings of a board-led nonprofit organization.

To be eligible to be on the Teen Art Board, a student must:

  • Be a high school student during the school year;
  • Be highly motivated and passionate about art and developing community projects;
  • Commit to attending meetings (now scheduled for the first Tuesday of the month at 5:30 pm) during the school year;
  • Commit to actively engage and assist in conducting events at the museum.
