Family Opening Day is Saturday, Jan 27 at the AMA

Family Day Has Art Demos, Art Projects and Gallery Scavenger Hunts

Saturday | Jan 27, 2024 | 11 AM-2 PM | Free for Everyone

The Family Opening Day for the four new winter/spring exhibitions at the Albany Museum of Art will be 11 am-2 pm on Saturday, Jan 27. The event is free and open to the public.

“While we officially open the new exhibitions with the Opening Reception on Feb 1, the exhibitions will be installed and families will be able to visit the galleries, where kids can win prizes with a scavenger hunt,” AMA Director of Education and Public Programming Annie Vanoteghem said. “Plus, kids will be able to meet some of the teaching artists from the Artists as Educators exhibition, and our friends from Cornerstone Coffee Company will have coffee and pastries for sale in the lobby area. Even better, the first 30 adults who arrive will get a free coffee.”

The new exhibitions that will be on view are Gold Soundz, works by Rob Matre, in the Haley Gallery; Andy Warhol: Hand-Colored Flowers in the East Gallery; Educators as Artists, 5th juried exhibition, in the McCormack Gallery, and Old Master Drawings from the Shaffer Collection in the Hodges Gallery. The four exhibitions will be open through April 20.

“Four of the college educators whose artworks are in the Educators as Artists exhibition will be at Family Opening Day,” Vanoteghem said. Confirmed to attend are:

  • Scott Marini, professor of art at Albany State University, will demonstrate the paper-making and molding process;
  • Ansley Simmons, Ph.D., assistant professor of art at ASU, will demonstrate cyanotypes;
  • Laurel Robinson, professor and Visual Arts Department chair at Georgia Southwestern State University, will demonstrate aluminum tooling;
  • Edrian Malloy, chair of engineering graphics at Albany Technical College, will be in the McCormack Gallery to talk with visitors.

Young family members will have a chance to create their own work of art in the AMA Classroom, she said. “Not only will the art demos be hands-on experiences, but kids will be able to engage in a take-home art project.”

In addition, the AMAzing Space creative play area will be open all day.

Admission to the AMA, which is open 10 am-5 pm Tuesdays-Saturdays, is free for everyone. The artist demos, kids’ art projects, and the scavenger hunt are free as well.
