Kid Artrepreneurs Market is July 18 at the AMA

Campers Will Sell Their Art at the Lunchtime Event

Kid Artrepreneurs campers at the Albany Museum of Art learn more than how to create art. They learn how to market and sell their creations.

The campers in kindergarten through 9th grade will bring all their talent and business skills together on Friday, July 18, at the Kid Artrepreneurs Lunchtime Market. The event will be from noon to 2 pm at the AMA, 311 Meadowlark Drive.

“There is more to an art career than creating art. The artist also has to market and sell it,” Director of Education and Public Programming Annie Van Oteghem said. “This camp gives kids the experience of combining art with entrepreneurship.”

Taught by Megan Lisenby and Sumar Favreau, campers form teams to develop and launch their art-based businesses. During the week, they design personal business cards and logos, brainstorm and produce unique products, set pricing, create marketing strategies, and craft eye-catching packaging and displays. They sell their products for cash at the Friday marketplace.

“This is a good life experience, especially for students who might want to pursue an art career later,” Van Oteghem said. “But it has even wider value. Learning how to value your time, talent, and materials is a skill that these campers will use and further develop in whatever career field they choose.”

The marketplace places the kids in a real-life business environment. “For our first-time campers, it’s probably their first opportunity to interact directly with customers,” Van Oteghem said. “For returning Artrepreneur campers, it’s a chance to polish their skills.”

While the marketplace attracts family and friends of the campers, it also brings in members of the community who see the value of art in education and who want to support the efforts of the enterprising campers, she said.

Admission to the AMA and the Kid Artrepreneurs Lunchtime Market are free.

“And you never know,” Van Oteghem said. “You just might acquire an early work by a future famous artist!”
