Make Memories at Familiar Rhythm Family Day on May 2

Artists Maiya Lea Hartman and Larry Cook Will Help Visitors Become Memory Makers

When the Familiar Rhythm exhibition closes on Saturday, May 2, at the Albany Museum of Art, memories will live on with those who viewed it and found connections to their own past. At a special Family Day program on Saturday at the AMA, families can take home a more tangible relationship to the exhibition and their own histories.

Familiar Rhythm Family Day, from 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday, will be a hands-on, drop-in style program where families are invited to explore memories, nostalgia, and how images and experiences shift over time. There is no cost to participate, and admission to the AMA is free.

Inspired by artworks on view in Familiar Rhythm: Time, Nostalgia, and Memory, families will be encouraged to explore their history together through art.

“There will be a Memory Remix, where we’ll use collage and layering to explore how memories can shift,” AMA Director of Education and Public Programming Annie Van Oteghem said. “We’ll have an Adornment Studio, where participants can create expressive portraits with fabric, paper, and found materials. And we’ll create Memory Spaces, mini-installations based on real or imagined memories.”

She said families are encouraged to bring personal materials, such as photos, letters, fabrics, small objects, and other items that they would like to incorporate into their work, or use for inspiration.

There will also be open stations, including a community scrapbook and a prompt table for drawing memories. “Our friends with the Dougherty County Public Library will be here to help families learn about genealogy and local history resources,” Van Oteghem said. “I think families will learn a little more about themselves, and have a great time doing it.”
