2nd SWGA Student Art Exhibition Opens on Nov 15 at the Albany Museum of Art
The Deadline for Middle and High School Student Submissions Is Friday, Nov 7
Middle and high school students in Southwest Georgia can showcase their artwork—and high school artists can win cash awards—at the 2nd annual Juried Southwest Georgia Student Art Exhibition at the Albany Museum of Art.
The exhibition and awards will be announced on Saturday, Nov 15, at the AMA’s 8th annual fall art celebration, The Heart of Albany Festival.
The deadline for students to submit their work is Friday, Nov 7.
“We had a tremendous response to our first exhibition at the 2024 festival, and we are looking for even more submissions this year,” AMA Director of Education and Public Programming Annie Van Oteghem said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to have their work shown in a museum setting, and for young artists to get recognized for their outstanding work. We have a wealth of art talent in the schools in our region, and this is an opportunity for them to shine.”
Students can submit up to two original works created between Nov 1, 2024, and Nov 7, 2025. The artworks can be entered in the same category or in two different categories. The categories for the contest and exhibition are:
- Abstract Work (2D): Representational and non-objective styles that explore form, color, and emotion beyond realism;
- Technical Work (2D): Realistic, detailed, and skillful representations that showcase drawing, painting, and design precision;
- Enhanced Photography & Digital Art (2D): Photography or digital creations using editing software, composite imagery, or digital illustration;
- Sculpture & 3D Art: Freestanding or relief works that explore form and space using materials such as clay, wood, metal, resin, or found objects.
First- and second-place awards and honorable mention will be selected in each category in the middle school and high school divisions. In addition to certificates, the first- and second-place winners in the high school division also will receive cash awards.
“Festival-goers also will be able to vote for their favorite artwork during The Heart of Albany Festival,” Van Oteghem said. “The student whose work gets the most votes from festival-goers will win the People’s Choice Award, which also comes with a cash prize.
“We will announce the winners from the James M. Barnett, Jr. Foundation Stage during The Heart of Albany Festival, and all accepted submissions will be on view for thousands of visitors to enjoy during the festival and the two-month exhibition.”
The exhibition will be on view in the West Gallery of the Albany Museum of Art through Saturday, Jan 3, 2026.
