Yoga in the Gallery Returns to the AMA

Yoga in the Gallery

Saturdays | Jan 6, March , May | 10 AM

The new year will open with an old favorite returning at a new time at the Albany Museum of Art. Beginning Saturday, Jan 6, Yoga in the Gallery returns to the museum.

“Yoga is a wonderful way to experience art,” AMA Director of Education and Public Programming Annie Vanoteghem said. “And after the big Christmas rush and New Year celebrations, it’s the perfect way to take a deep breath and relax your mind and body for a brand-new year in an atmosphere inspired by wonderful art.”

Previous sessions of Yoga in the Gallery were conducted on Friday evenings, but Vanoteghem said organizers hope the hour-long Saturday morning sessions that will start at 10 am will be more convenient for participants. The sessions will be conducted bimonthly on the first Saturday of the month. The Jan 6 session will be followed with yoga sessions on March 2 and May 4.

“You will never have the same experience twice as each exhibit will ignite something new in your meditation,” Vanotegehm said. “Our guests will be able to disconnect from the distractions of the world and experience art in a new, more intentional way. We want our community to take the time to prioritize mental awareness, using the artistic environment to help.”

Renea Miller, who led a gallery session at the AMA at a 2023 event for teachers, will instruct the classes. She said that she enjoyed participating in previous yoga classes at the museum that were led by Amanda Borghi.

“I was disappointed when I heard she’d moved away,” Miller said. “Since I have gotten certified in yoga, I wanted to help carry on Yoga in the Gallery. “

The program is for all levels of participants, and no previous yoga experience is necessary. Participants should bring a mat and dress comfortably for the class.

“My yoga practice will consist of poses that flow into strength and flexibility postures, while our breathing will enhance our mind, body, and spiritual connection into a relaxing phase,” Miller said.

The class costs $5 for AMA donors or $10 for non-donors.
