Albany Museum of Art
Planning Your Visit

At the Albany Museum of Art, we want to encourage your students to be engaged and respectful visitors.
Most importantly, we encourage them to have fun!
How do I schedule a school program or tour?
Complete the online request form HERE.

What if I need more information?
You may download a copy of the 2021-22 school year tour packet HERE.

If you have further questions, please email
Annie Vanoteghem, Director of Education and Public Programming, or call 229.439.8400.

What is the cost of the school tours or programs?
Tour groups are free.

Tour size/COVID-19 precautions
Depending on the size of groups, multiple dates may be required. As of February 2022, all AMA visitors (3 years old and older) are required to wear a facial covering, and have their temperature taken and hands sanitized at the door. Please reach out to us with any questions or concerns.

Do you have a virtual field trip?
This year, we are offering virtual field trips to classes that cannot meet or travel. Please Contact Annie Vanoteghem for further information, as this will vary for each grade level and class ability.

What time do school programs take place?
Tours are available September through May on Tuesdays through Fridays with tour start times from 9:45 am until 2 pm.  Please schedule your tour at least one week in advance.

What time should I arrive at the Museum?
We advise that a group arrive 10 minutes before its tour is scheduled to begin. Unfortunately, if your group arrives late, we will need to shorten your tour to fit within the time allotted. If you need to leave earlier than your scheduled time, please let us know as soon as possible so that we may adjust your curriculum for optimal results.

Do I need to schedule my field trip if I don’t want to book a tour and/or program?
Yes. Self-guided visits for school groups are scheduled Tuesdays through Fridays and require advance scheduling to ensure availability of gallery space.

How many chaperones do I need?
Chaperones are encouraged and welcomed for all school visits, but we require one chaperone for every eight students for self-guided visits. Chaperones must stay with their groups at all times, including stops at the restrooms, and are responsible for the group’s behavior while visiting the museum. The museum staff is not responsible for monitoring the behavior of students. If a staff member must intervene, the museum reserves the right to ask the entire group to leave the museum.

What happens if we arrive late?
The Albany Museum of Art cannot guarantee a guided tour for a group that arrives more than 30 minutes after its scheduled tour time. If you are delayed, however, we will try to accommodate your group with a self-guided tour.

Is there material to help me prepare my students for our visit?
Tour packets are available upon request. The packets will include an overview of what you and your students will see while at the Albany Museum of Art. Pre- and post-visit activities are included for you to complete before and after your visit.

Where do I unload my students and where do I park?
Buses, vans and cars can drop students off at the front of the Museum, then proceed to the parking area to the right of the building.

Does the Museum have a picnic area?
The Museum does have a place to picnic.  The pecan grove is a wonderful, shady place to enjoy your lunch after the visit. We also have 3 outdoor picnic tables available.

Can I stay in the Museum once my tour is finished?
School groups are welcome to stay in the AMA and visit any of the galleries.  We ask that you please respect the spaces that are needed for other students and yield to any guided group.

Are there any special instructions I should know before my field trip?
  • Food, drinks and gum are not allowed inside the museum.
  • Backpacks, large purses and similar items are not allowed in the museum and should be left on the bus or at school.
  • Non-flash photography is allowed. Please check with your museum teacher or docent prior to taking pictures.
  • No crayons, pens, markers, or wet materials are permitted in the galleries. Please do not lean on walls or cases and do not use them as writing surfaces.
  • Please be aware that the museum is open to the public during all school programs, and we ask your cooperation to ensure that all visitors—whether part of student programs or the general public—enjoy their museum experience.
