Today we are learning about artist Wassily Kandinsky!
Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and printmaker in the 20th century! He is one of the artists who helped people change how they look at art, and start to appreciate abstract works. He was a very smart man who played many instruments, studied many subjects, and created revolutionary works of art!

In his life, Kandinsky was always fascinated by color, especially as a child. He related color with symbolism and psychology (how our brains work). It is believed that he may have had a medical condition that allowed him to see colors when he heard music and other sounds! He went from drawing lifelike figures to painting abstract shapes and colors. He would often listen to music as he painted, and he was able to play many instruments. Do you listen to music while you paint? Do different kinds of music make you want to use different colors? |
Art Break!
Fold your paper in half hotdog style. Keep it folded and fold it again, hamburger style. Now, one more hamburger style fold! Open your paper, and you will have 8 rectangles.
On one rectangle, paint a red dot. On the next one, paint a red ring, and on the next one paint a large red circle. Rinse your brush!
On you red dot rectangle, paint a yellow ring around the dot. In the next one, and paint a yellow dot in the middle of your red ring. Continue with this until you have filled all of your circles to look like Kandinsky!
