Today we are going to make some really fun creatures using symmetry! Do you know what symmetry is? Symmetry is when an object looks exactly the same on one side as the other. To see if an object is symmetrical, you draw a line of symmetry, or a line dividing an object in half, to show a perfect match on each side. It's like making a mirror image. Can you think of something that is symmetrical?
Symmetry is an important part of geometry, a kind of math that deals with shapes and figures. Geometry explains how to build or draw shapes, measure them, and compare them. People use it in many kinds of work, from building houses and bridges to planning space travel.
How do we use symmetry to make our own creature?
- White cardstock or paper
- Scissors
- Markers, crayons or colored pencils
You can make many different kinds of creatures by using different words. You can make one that is your first name, and one that is your last name. You can use a pet or sibling's name. You can even use other words, such as a color or your favorite food!
