Courageous Conversations Rescheduled for Sept 22

Art Is the Catalyst for Important Discussions on Race

The Program Was Rescheduled from July 22

The Courageous Conversations About Race workshop for educators and community leaders has been rescheduled for Friday, Sept 22, 2023, at the Albany Museum of Art.

The 8 am-2 pm session is free to participants thanks to the United Way of Southwest Georgia Reimagine Albany Initiative. The workshop is limited to 32 participants, so online registration is required.

Albany Museum of Art Executive Director Andrew J. Wulf, Ph.D., said it is critical for museums to address head-on “the difficult themes of race and racism in a safe space where these topics can be explored civilly.” Courageous Conversations About Race is an example of the AMA’s responsible service to the community and symbolizes the museum’s commitment to serving all inclusively, he said.

Gloria J. Wilson, Ph.D., associate professor at Ohio State University, and Sara Scott Shields, Ph.D., an art education associate professor, and department chair at Florida State University, will again facilitate the program, using artworks to provoke discussions about race and racism.

“It was unfortunate that a late flight cancellation forced us to postpone the session in July, but we were delighted that Sept 22 worked with our facilitators’ schedules,” AMA Director of Education and Public Programming Annie Vanoteghem said. “Drs. Wilson and Shields are a powerful, effective team. They have facilitated this program since the first one was held at the AMA in 2018.”

Those who registered for the July session are asked to email Vanoteghem HERE to confirm that they will attend the Sept 22 workshop.

“This is an important conversation that needs to include as many voices as possible,” Vanoteghem said. “We were nearing full registration in July, and we hope that everyone who registered then will be able to attend. If any registrants find they have scheduling conflicts with the new date and they will be unable to participate, we would like to know so that we can open those spaces to others.”

The free registration link may be found HERE. Lunch and snacks will be provided during the program. A $10 donation is suggested.
