Parents: Thank you for joining us for our Toddler Takeover Tuesday online lesson! Go through this blog with your child. Your child can lead you in the exploration of color matching, sorting, and discovering the rainbow order.

Let us know how they do by sending a photo to us at
annie.vanoteghem@albanymuseum.com, or by tagging #AlbanyMuseumOfArt if you post your photo on Facebook! We'll share on the AMA Facebook Page!
Hey Friends!
Spring time is just around the corner, which means we will be seeing a lot of rain. But, what comes after the rain? A rainbow!
Picture
What is a rainbow? The sun makes rainbows when white sunlight passes through rain drops after a rain shower. The little drops of water in the sky bend the different colors in white light, so the light spreads out into a band of colors that can be reflected back to you as a rainbow.

Have you ever seen a rainbow in the sky? You might have noticed that the colors are always in the same order: RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE,
INDIGO and VIOLET!

For our rainbow, let's use red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and pink!

Let's learn the rainbow color song together to help us remember!

Great job!
Whenever you want to remember the colors of the rainbow, just sing this song!

Are you ready to make some art?

The very first thing we have to go is gather our supplies! For this project, you will need:
  • A sheet of  white paper (any size)
  • Scraps of paper with the colors of the rainbow OR white paper that you color or paint with rainbow colors
  • Glue
  • Markers/crayons/paint/or colored pencils

The next thing you will do is either print out or draw your own rainbow template, like the one below!
Make sure your rainbow has 7 bands for you to fill in with your beautiful color.

Next, tear your colored sheets of paper into small pieces. I am using a mix of tissue paper and construction paper. If you do not have colored paper, you can fill in white paper with your markers, crayons, paints or pencils! You can also try looking around your house for colored sheets of paper in unexpected places, like old mail, magazines, wrapping paper or cardboard boxes!
Once you have your pieces torn, mix them all up in a mix pile!
Do you remember the colors of the rainbow?
Starting with RED, Let's sort all of our colors into piles.
Picture
Great job! Now, grab your glue bottle or glue stick (if you use a bottle of glue, try using a small paintbrush or a Q-tip to apply the glue) and begin to fill in your rainbow! We will start with the largest band and fill it in with all the RED pieces. Next, we will move onto the next band and fill it in with all the ORANGE pieces. Can you tell me what comes next?
Picture
TA-DA! You now have a beautiful rainbow of your very own. Great job! Make sure to visit the Albany Museum of Art to do a rainbow color hunt in the art galleries and play in AMAzing space.
I can't wait to see you!
