Have you seen people wearing masks lately? I’m sure when you leave the house and go to the store you’ve seen at least one person wearing a mask. While we may be wearing them for different reasons today, people have worn masks for a long time for many different reasons. There are many different cultures in the past that have used the mask as part of their everyday activities. Some of these cultures still do!
Today, we are going to be talking about African masks in particular. All over Africa, from the West Coast to the East Coast, African countries have all used masks in different ways. They use them when they’re dancing, for religious purposes and for important milestone ceremonies.
These masks are considered art, the Albany Museum of Art has many African masks like this in their collection!
It may look a little scary, but that was done on purpose. It was created to scare away bad spirits and protect those who used it. It Is also used to help people settle any arguments they may have and to learn lessons about what is right and what is wrong. What do you think of this mask?
