Identity Self-Portraits

Hello Friends!

What is a self portrait?
When we think of portraiture, we normally think of pictures of faces and people. When we say "self-portrait," we think of a picture of ourselves that we make. Think of a "selfie" that you can take with your phone camera. That is a self portrait!  But sometimes, a "portrait" of a person may include symbols instead of an actual face!

An "Identity Portrait" helps us to think about ourselves and what is important to us. We can show people who we are by drawing symbols of things that are important to us rather than how we physically look. What kind of symbols would you use to
describe yourself? All you need today is some paper and something to draw with!

Brainstorm

Picture
First, write down several words about yourself in a chart that you can communicate through a portrait! These can be things that you like, your age, traits, etc. Start with a circle with your name in it. From there, draw a line with a new circle, or bubble, attached. Fill that bubble in with one thing about yourself. It could be your age, your favorite color, your favorite activity.

Add as many bubbles with words that describe yourself as you can think of!

Write

Take all of those words that you wrote and create a description of yourself in a paragraph. Write it like you are introducing yourself to a new friend. It could start off with something like this: "Hello, my name is Annie. I am 5 feet tall. I love to drink coffee and listen to music. Christmas is my favorite holiday..." (Use all of your words!)

Draw

Picture
Now, take a blank sheet of paper. Take all of these ideas and draw them using symbols. For example, if you wrote down that you are 10 years old, you can draw the number "10," or even draw 10 birthday candles.

Do the same thing for all the words that you thought of!  Try to fill the entire surface of the paper with symbols.

Decide which symbols are most important to your identity. Maybe you want to make those symbols larger or more eye-catchy in your picture!

How can you get creative?
Notice how my book is a specific one?

I used five footprints to show my height!

How can you get creative?

Can you fill the whole page?

What's in your identity self-portrait?

When someone sees this piece of art, they get to learn some things about you!

Thank you for learning with me today!
Come back tomorrow!
