Have you ever heard of an assemblage? Assemblage! That’s kind of a funny word isn’t It?
Well, an assemblage is a cool 3D sculpture that an artist can put together. It’s usually made of things an artist can find and collect over time. These are sometimes called found objects. Let’s look at some exciting examples of assemblages and layer you can even make your own assemblage of all of your favorite things! Let’s get right into it!
The photo above is from an exhibition by Atlanta artist Zipporah Thompson that was shown here at the Albany Museum of Art in spring 2019. The artwork, titled Black Attendant Earth Spirits, is made up of quite a few different items. The artist used fabric, paper, paint, Mylar, thread, rope, a tarp, tape and flowers to create this piece.
What does it make you think about?
Thompson uses quite a few different things in her artwork. Other artists might use fewer items. Sometimes they get your curiosity going by using things that don't seem to fit just right.
